WHAT DRIVES ME?

The Values Behind Our Choices

We make hundreds of choices every day.

Some are small.

Some change the course of our lives.

Some affect only us.

Others affect the people who work with us, depend on us and trust us.

We often believe our choices are driven by logic.

But beneath many of our choices lies something deeper:

What matters to us.

Our values.

WE ALL HAVE VALUES

We may not always be able to name them.

But they influence the way we live, work and lead.

For one person, achievement may matter deeply.

For another, security.

For someone else, freedom, fairness, recognition, relationships, learning, service or integrity.

None of these is necessarily right or wrong.

They simply tell us something about what matters to us.

And what matters to us often influences what we choose.

BUT HERE IS THE INTERESTING PART

We can say that we value one thing…

and behave as if we value something completely different.

We may say:

“People are important to me.”

But when pressure comes, do we listen?

We may say:

“Integrity is important.”

But what happens when telling the truth comes at a cost?

We may say:

“Work-life balance matters.”

But what do our choices actually say?

There is often a difference between the values we claim and the values our choices reveal.

And that difference is worth exploring.

WHEN VALUES COLLIDE

Values become most visible when they are tested.

Imagine you are leading a team and you have two choices:

Protect your best performer
or
Do what is fair to the whole team.

What would you choose?

Or:

Meet an important deadline
or
Take more time to ensure quality.

Or:

Remain loyal to someone you trust
or
Speak up when you disagree with them.

Suddenly, values are no longer words on a wall.

They become choices.

And sometimes, there is no perfect choice.

There is only a choice that tells us:

What matters most to me right now?

THE LEADER WITHIN

This is where leadership becomes deeply personal.

Leadership is not only about vision, strategy, communication or decision-making.

It is also about knowing:

What do I stand for?

What will I not compromise?

What happens to my values when I am under pressure?

What do my decisions tell people about what I truly believe?

Because people don’t experience our values through our words.

They experience them through our behaviour.

A MOMENT OF REFLECTION

Think about a difficult decision you made recently.

Don’t judge the decision.

Just look at it.

Ask yourself:

What was important to me at that moment?

What was I trying to protect?

What was I unwilling to lose?

Which value influenced my choice?

And perhaps the most uncomfortable question:

Did my behaviour reflect the values I say I believe in?

THE INNER LEADER

The journey of leadership begins long before we lead others.

It begins with understanding ourselves.

Who am I?

And then comes another question:

What drives me?

Because when we become aware of the values behind our choices, we begin to understand the leader within us a little better.

Perhaps leadership is not about having all the right answers.

Perhaps it begins with having the courage to examine the choices we make.
