Culture by Design

ABOUT THE MODULE

Organisational culture is not created by posters, policies or statements on a wall. It is shaped by what leaders model, what organisations reward, what people experience and what behaviours become accepted over time.

This module explores how culture is created, reinforced and changed — and how leaders can intentionally shape an environment that supports the organisation’s purpose, values and desired behaviours.

It moves from culture as something that happens to culture as something that can be consciously shaped.

WHAT WE EXPLORE

  • Understanding organisational culture and its impact
  • The visible and invisible elements of culture
  • Values, behaviours and everyday organisational norms
  • How leaders shape culture through their actions
  • The connection between culture, strategy and performance
  • What organisations reward, tolerate and reinforce
  • Trust, accountability and psychological safety as cultural elements
  • Identifying healthy and unhealthy cultural patterns
  • Culture gaps between stated values and lived experience
  • Creating desired behaviours through systems and leadership
  • Building a culture that supports both people and performance

THE EXPERIENCE

Participants explore culture through real organisational situations, culture-mapping exercises, case discussions, reflection and facilitated conversations.

They examine the difference between the culture an organisation says it has and the culture people actually experience.

The experience asks:

“If we stopped talking about our values and simply observed our behaviours, what would our culture tell us?”

OUTCOMES

Participants will:

  • Understand the key drivers of organisational culture
  • Recognise how leadership behaviour shapes culture
  • Identify gaps between stated and lived values
  • Recognise behaviours that strengthen or weaken culture
  • Understand the relationship between culture and performance
  • Identify cultural patterns that need to change
  • Think more intentionally about the culture they are creating
  • Identify practical actions for strengthening desired behaviours
  • Contribute to a culture of trust, accountability and performance

THE SHIFT

From: Culture as something that happens
To: Culture as something we consciously shape

From: Stated values
To: Lived values

From: Culture owned by HR
To: Culture owned by everyone

From: Tolerating behaviours
To: Intentionally reinforcing behaviours

REFLECTION

If our culture is shaped by what we repeatedly do, reward and tolerate, what are we currently creating?

What is one behaviour we need to start, stop or strengthen to create the culture we want?

Service FAQ

Questions about this service.

These answers help organisations quickly understand the scope, timing, and best fit for this service line.

Culture cannot simply be designed through statements or policies. It is shaped by what leaders model, what the organisation rewards and tolerates, what people experience and which behaviours are repeatedly reinforced. Leaders can, however, consciously influence the culture they create.rn
Values written in policies or displayed on walls do not automatically become lived values. The real culture is often revealed through everyday behaviours, decisions, rewards, tolerances and the experiences of employees.rn
Leadership behaviour is one of the strongest influences on culture. What leaders consistently demonstrate, recognise, challenge and tolerate sends powerful signals about what really matters in the organisation.rn
Yes. Culture influences how people collaborate, make decisions, take accountability, respond to problems and pursue results. The module explores the relationship between culture, strategy and performance.rn
No. HR can facilitate and enable cultural development, but culture is experienced across the organisation and is shaped by leaders, managers and employees through everyday behaviour.rn
The shift is from culture as something that happens to culture as something we consciously shape; from stated values to lived values; and from tolerating behaviours to intentionally reinforcing behaviours.rn
